(SULLIVAN) - The Central Elementary School in Sullivan has been closed for 12 years, but in recent years, its become not just an eye sore and but a safety hazard to the community and mayor Clint Lamb plans to do something about it.

Matt Gregory, of WTHI TV, reports that on Sunday, Mayor Lamb sponsored an Ice cream social in front of the school. He took the opportunity to talk about community issues with citizens and showcase the poor condition of the school.

One look inside the building and you can easily see the neglect and vandalism. City officials have said the school is beyond refurbishing and renovating. The EPA will not allow the city to turn the property into a residence.

So the mayor says one possible plan is to tear down the building. He is looking for a government grant to cover the demolition. But, his plan doesn't end with tearing the it down; it's about building something new for all of Sullivan to appreciate in its place; a city park.
