Last updated on Monday, May 28, 2012

(GREENFIELD) - A small plane crashed into trees across the street from Pope Field in Hancock County. That’s on the east side of Greenfield, just off US 40, which is also Main Street.

The single engine, 4-seat plane went down on takeoff near Pennsy Trail with three people onboard.

The pilot, Melvin Ed Grant, was treated and released at the scene. His son Mark Grant and another passenger Andrew Pfaff were taken to Methodist Hospital after going into shock. However, The Hancock County Sheriff's Department says all passengers were alert and outside the aircraft when first responders arrived.

Pennsy Trail is just south of Pope Field.

The Piper Tri Pacer airplane is registered to Donald Barnes of Wagener, South Carolina.

Federal authorities will investigate the crash.
