(NOTRE DAME) - St. Joseph County Police have confirmed to WSBT that two Notre Dame football players were arrested early Thursday morning.

South Bend Police were dispatched to a home on 716 North Notre Dame avenue just after 12:30 a.m.

Sgt. Bill Redman of St. Joseph County Police says Quarterback Tommy Rees and Linebacker Carlo Calabrese were booked into the St. Joseph County jail just after 1:00 a.m.

According to Redman, Rees was arrested for public intoxication, resisting law enforcement, minor consumption and battery to law enforcement - a felony charge.

Police say that Rees was pepper-sprayed prior to being taken into police custody.

Calabrese was arrested for disorderly conduct.

Notre Dame issued this statement Thursday morning regarding the arrests:

"The University is aware of this incident and is confident that it will be handled in a prompt and professional manner through the criminal justice system. Internal discipline is handled privately, in accord with our own policies and federal law."

Calabrese bonded out for $150 at 3:42 am

Rees and Calabrese are due back in court May 17.

Rees is one of the 4 Notre Dame quarterbacks competing this year for a starting position on the Irish football team.
