Judgment Day Looms For Indy 500 Festival Parade

Last updated on Thursday, May 24, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Today’s judgment day for more than a dozen floats in this year’s Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade.

The floats are docked in their spots in Downtown Indy for judges to give them the look over.

Float Designer Greg Duncan of ExpoDesign says there are about 13 new floats taking part in this year's event.

Creating and building them ain't cheap. Duncan says they cost anywhere from $20,000 to $60,000 each. Duncan and about fifteen staffers usually begin work on new floats a year in advance. Duncan has been designing and building floats for 15 years.

Firms with floats in this year's parade include: Anthem, IMS, Elil Lilly, American Dairy, Sexton and Firestone.

Ultimately, Duncan says it's about making big, bright, colorful things that appeal to kids and the young at heart.
