(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indianapolis metro police deputy chief has been cleared of any wrongdoing in the mishandling of a blood sample from an officer involved in a fatal crash while believed to be drunk.

Police said Tuesday that Deputy Chief Valerie Cunningham had been cleared and has returned to active duty. She has assumed responsibilities as the deputy chief of administration.

Public Safety Director Frank Straub had placed her, another top officer and a civilian property room supervisor on paid leave last month for mishandling the blood sample taken from Officer David Bisard after the August 2010 crash that killed one motorcyclist and left two others seriously injured.

Straub has since submitted his resignation.
