Garage Sale Find Prompts Bomb Squad Scare

Last updated on Tuesday, May 22, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - A cheap garage sale find ended with the bomb squad being called out to a north side home.

David Smith told police he bought what he believed to be a live mortar round for $1 at an area garage sale Saturday.

But once he went home, he got worried that the round might still be capable of detonating.

The bomb squad was called to Smith's home in the 4600 block of Kessler Boulevard North Drive, where they carefully removed the device.

It was later identified as a military-grade 81MM mortar. It was placed in a bunker for later disposal.
