Excise Police Bust 125 During Race Celebrations

Last updated on Monday, May 28, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana Excise Police cracked down on underage drinking surrounding the Indianapolis 500, issuing more than 100 tickets throughout the celebration.

Officers handed out 125 tickets, mostly for illegal possession or consumption of alcohol, primarily during Friday's Carb Day and the night before the race along Georgetown Road.

Besides alcohol charges, excise police made arrests for possession of marijuana, public intoxication, resisting law enforcement and public indecency.

"With large amounts of alcohol consumed this weekend, officers must monitor activities closely so everyone has an enjoyable, but safe, time," Excise Police Superintendent Matt Strittmatter said in a news release. "State Excise officers are committed to ensuring the safety of young people by focusing on an important goal of the agency's mission, which is controlling the access of alcohol to minors."

Last year, excise officers issued 174 tickets in the celebration surrounding the 500.
