(BROWNSBURG) - Marijuana, alcohol and excessive speed may have been factors in a crash Saturday that killed one teen and injured four more, Brownsburg police said.

The crash happened about 8:40 a.m. Saturday in the 6900 block of County Road 550 East.

When police arrived, they found that a car driven by Christopher Hubbard, 17, of Brownsburg, had struck a tree.

A back seat passenger, Nathan Gentry, 18, of Brownsburg, suffered massive head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sean Bloomquist, 18, the front seat passenger, was the only occupant wearing a seatbelt, police said, but he was critically injured.

Taylor Lamonte, 16, was also seriously injured, suffering a broken hip, broken leg and broken arms. Hubbard suffered broken bones, and Ian Cherco, 16, was treated and released.

Gentry, Hubbard and Lamonte attended Brownsburg High School, while Cherco and Bloomquist are Tri-West students.

Brownsburg police Detective Sgt. Jennifer Pyatt-Barrett said marijuana and alcohol are believed to be contributing factors in the crash because of victims' statements and paraphernalia found at the scene.

"All the information did come from some of the occupants in the vehicle who did discuss that either one of two things - there was marijuana usage involved and/or alcohol," Pyatt-Barrett said.

Police are investigating events that led to the crash. Charges could be filed against surviving victims, once police findings are turned over to prosecutors.
