Court To Set Bond For Woman Who Ate Rat Poison While Pregnant

Last updated on Wednesday, May 16, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - A judge this week will consider how high to set bail for an Indianapolis woman charged with murder and feticide for eating rat poison while she was pregnant.

A bond hearing for 35-year-old Bei Bei Shuai will be held Friday in Marion County Superior Court.

Judge Sheila Carlisle refused to allow Shuai to be released from jail last June, but the Indiana Court of Appeals later ordered her to set bond for the Chinese immigrant. The Indiana Supreme Court last week allowed the appeals court ruling to stand.

Bond is extremely rare in murder cases. But the appeals court said Shuai's attorneys presented sufficient evidence to rebut the charges, though it declined to dismiss them.

The case has drawn attention from national medical and women's rights groups.
