(BEECH GROVE) - A 12-year-old boy was arrested Thursday evening after he drove himself and two other children to a pet store and a pizza shop, police said.
The pet store owner told police she saw the boy drive away from the store in the 4800 block of South Emerson Avenue and go to a Little Caesars store nearby.
Calls from concerned drivers started flooding in to 911.
"I'm sitting at the Little Caesar's in Beech Grove off Emerson, and there's like a 12-year-old kid driving a car, bouncing off curbs," one caller said.
"He's all over the road. Oh my God, he's all the way up on the sidewalk," another caller said. "He just about rear-ended this car in front of us. Oh my God."
According to a police report, the boy bought a pizza and drove away from the pizza shop as the woman from the pet store tried to get him to stop.
The woman trailed the boy, who police said had a 7-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl as passengers, and called police.
Police began following the boy along Emerson Avenue, and the boy crashed a short time later into an SUV at Hornet Avenue, investigators said.
Police said the boy's mother told them her mother was supposed to be watching the children, a claim the older woman denied.
The boy told investigators that he took his mother's car keys and drove the other children to a park and to the pizza shop because the children were hungry, police said.
The boy told investigators that he bought the pizza with $20 he had stolen from a neighbor.
The 12-year-old was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle without receiving a license, failure to stop, resisting law enforcement and unauthorized entry of motor vehicle.
Two children suffered minor injuries in the crash. The driver of the SUV was not hurt.
