Last updated on Wednesday, April 25, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Two teenage girls were injured in a crash involving a train on the near east side Tuesday night.

Police say the car the girls were in was inside a closed railroad crossing gate at Rural Street and Massachusetts Avenue just before midnight.

The 18-year-old driver tried to back out of the gates, but was struck on the driver's side by an oncoming train.

The driver suffered minor injuries, while her passenger, a female police believed to be 15 years old, was taken by ambulance to an Indianapolis hospital. The extent of her injuries are not known at this time.
