Police: Truck Driver Texting While Driving Before School Bus Crash

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Officials said the driver of a box truck that slammed into the back of a Pike Township school bus was texting while driving, police said.

The crash happened on Thursday about 3:30 p.m. at a railroad crossing near West 82nd Street and Zionsville Road.

Pike Township Schools Police Chief Alan Kasper said the driver was cited for texting while operating a motor vehicle and told police he read a text seconds before the crash.

Nine students suffered minor injuries are were taken to Peyton Manning Children's Hospital at St. Vincent.

"Some of (the children) were upset, crying, things like that, but there were no serious injuries that we could see," Kasper said.

Bus No. 1119 was transporting students home from Central Elementary School, officials said.
