Last updated on Thursday, April 5, 2012

(BUNKER HILL) - Indiana State Police say a prison inmate has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly beating a guard unconscious with a padlock inside a sock.

Sgt. Tony Slocum says 39-year-old Ruben Gonzalez also is charged with aggravated battery in Miami Circuit Court.

The Feb. 29 attack occurred inside Miami Correctional Facility housing unit. Slocum says the guard faces several months of rehabilitation after suffering a skull fracture, a broken jaw, arterial bleeding inside his neck, and hearing loss. Miami Correctional Facility is in Bunker Hill, about 60 miles southwest of Fort Wayne.

Gonzalez has since been transferred to the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility in southwestern Indiana. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison in 2000 in Lake County. It's not clear if he has an attorney.
