(WASHINGTON) - A Fort Carson soldier on his third deployment to Afghanistan has died from wounds he suffered in an improvised explosive device attack in Kunar province.

Military officials Monday identified the solider as 32-year-old Staff Sgt. David P. Nowaczyk of Dyer, Ind. He died Sunday.

Nowaczyk was an infantryman assigned to Fort Carson's 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.

Nowaczyk joined the Army in September 2005 and earned several medals for his service that include two Bronze Star Medals that are awarded for bravery or merit.

His most recent deployment began March 3. He had previously been deployed to Afghanistan in 2006 and 2009.
