(Greenwood) - Beginning at 7 a.m. Good Friday, a member of the Greenwood Christian Church stood in costume on a large cross outside the church.

Ann Keil, of Fox59, reports church officials said they wanted to send the message of Jesus Christ to their community.

"Get people thinking, be kind of provocative and I think it's getting the point across," said Bill Stewart, who dressed up as Jesus Christ for the event.

Some people couldn't believe their eyes.

"Is it animatronic or a real man?" asked Greg Stafford.

Others, reacted emotionally.

"This is a very hard task it is so cold out here and were taking that for granted as we sit here and watch them," said Tiffany Wells.

"This really moved me brought tears to my eyes," said Duane Appleget.

"I think (the makeup) adds to it, I think if it wasn't graphic people wouldn't understand the sacrifice that was made."

The scene was designed by one of the churches members who said he was moved by a similar demonstration.

"It's a little more up close and personal this way," said Matt Giebler of Greenwood Christian Church.

"Certainly it's a little bit uncomfortable but compared to the actual beating (Jesus suffered) I think I'll take the makeup," said Stewart.

Several men took turns portraying Christ. The last man got off the cross around 7:15 p.m., in time for the church's congregation to see the display on the way into service.
