Former Notre Dame, Colts QB Blair Kiel Dies In Columbus

(COLUMBUS) - Former Notre Dame and Indianapolis Colts quarterback Blair Kiel died Sunday in his hometown of Columbus.

Kiel apparently collapsed and while in the shower. Bartholomew County Coroner Allen Smith told the Associated Press Kiel died at Columbus Regional Hospital just before 12:30 Sunday afternoon. Smith said an autopsy has been performed and that he's waiting on toxicology results and tissue samples to determine the cause of death.

After leading Columbus East High School to a state title as a senior in 1979, Kiel played for the Irish from 1980-83, completing 297 of 609 passes for 3,650 yards with 17 touchdowns and 32 interceptions.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted Kiel in 1984. He played for the Colts during the 1986 and 1987 seasons. He completed 108 of 193 career passes for 1,296 yards and eight touchdowns.

Kiel was 50 years old.

His nephew, Gunner Kiel, is a freshman quarterback for the Fighting Irish who enrolled in January and is currently going through spring practice at Notre Dame.
