(INDIANAPOLIS) - A construction worker was killed in an accident on the city's northeast side Monday.

Indiana State Police said the accident did not involve any motorist vehicles.

According to officials, two workers were setting up a barrier wall when an excavator carrying jersey barriers became involved. The unnamed worker somehow became caught under the excavator. The 40,000 lb. vehicle ultimately crushed the worker.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation, the work the employees were doing was originally scheduled to take place during overnight hours when traffic would have been diverted away from the workers. Officials said it's possible Sunday night's rain delayed the work, resulting in the employees working without any traffic restrictions Monday.

The Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration will work to determine if a lack of room caused the worker to become trapped. IOSHA will also decide if a traffic restriction could have given the workers more room.

Officials said the employees were installing the barriers to protect workers from vehicular traffic.

The ramp reopened around 2 p.m.
