(INDIANAPOLIS) - Thirty-five dogs were removed from a squalid southeast side home whose owner said she was running a rescue operation, animal control officers said.

The dogs were taken from the home of Jo O' Keefe, 51, in the 3200 block of South Shortridge Road on Sunday.

Indianapolis Animal Care and Control officers said one dog died after being taken to the city shelter, while others had ringworm and were missing patches of hair.

Neighbors had called to complain that the animals were being mistreated and that the home's back yard was covered in feces.

Officers said the home reeked of urine and at least one bedroom was piled full of trash.

O'Keefe said she ran a rescue operation called Rescue for Retails from the home. She said many of the dogs had been adopted from the Indianapolis shelter.
