(HENRYVILLE) - Violent tornadoes tore through Indiana on Friday, killing at least 13 people and leaving miles of scattered debris through several small communities near the state's southern border.

(HENRYVILLE) - Violent tornadoes tore through Indiana on Friday, killing at least 13 people and leaving miles of scattered debris through several small communities near the state's southern border.

Four deaths were confirmed in Washington and Jefferson Counties, 3 in Scott County, two in Ripley county and one in Clark County.

Henryville, a town of about 2,000 people in Clark County, was especially hard hit.

The National Weather Service s say the EF4 tornado that walloped the Henryville, was on the ground for 52 miles and measured about 150 yards wide and packed 175 mph winds. It was followed by a second, smaller twister.

The full extent of damage sustained is still unknown. Damage assessments are beginning but it will be a few days before damage estimates can be quantified.

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels and Congressman Dan Coats visited Henryville, Marysville and New Pekin this weekend. The Indiana National Guard, Indiana Task Force One, the Red Cross and other counties deployed teams to respond to the event along with federal officials.

Daniels has declared disaster emergencies for 11 counties

The death toll is:

Washington County 5

Jefferson County 4

Ripley County 2

Clark County 1
