(FRANKLIN) - The Trafalgar mother accused of killing her 3-year-old son will undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine whether she can stand trial.
According to the Daily Journal, Johnson County Prosecutor Bradley Cooper had expected attorneys to file an insanity defense in Amanda Smith's case. In addition to her murder charge for her young son's death , Smith is facing charges after police say she tried to kill a police officer with an ax and jail officials said she attacked a jail officer.
Smith's attorneys have filed a motion to announce their plans to pursue an insanity defense. The court will now appoint psychologists to assess Smith to see if she can stand trial and if she may have been insane when her 3-year-old son was killed.
Investigators say Smith admitted to police she drowned her son in a bath tub because she "wanted to save him from any of the horrible things that might happen to him in the future."
