(TERRE HAUTE) - It’s a product that’s familiar to many, Tide, but officials fear it’s being stolen for use on the black market.
Vigo County Sheriff, Greg Ewing says he received a troubling warning from the sheriff's office in Shelby County saying a new trend is developing.
Folks are stealing bottles of Tide detergent and then selling them on the black market at a discounted price.
Here's why: each bottle has a relatively high street value, at least $10. The bottle's bright color makes recognizable to underground vendors, and it doesn't have a serial number so it's hard to track.
Sheriff Ewing says he thought the idea was bizarre when he first heard. He says the trend hasn't spread to the Valley at this point, but he assures, the department is keeping an eye on it.
"You know, they're not taking it and using it to manufacture drugs or anything like that. My understanding is that they are simply stealing it and then they can simply turn around and sell it on the black market to get cash to turn around to buy drugs," Sheriff Ewing says.
