(VALPARAISO) A northwestern Indiana sheriff is asking a merit board to fire an officer involved in five on-the-job crashes in three years, the final one occurring in September when he flipped a car on Interstate 65 while heading to a remedial driving program.
Porter County Sheriff David Lain wants Officer Paul Arnold fired. The Post-Tribune of Merrillville and The Times of Munster report that Arnold's attorney said during a merit board hearing Wednesday that one accident was a scratch on the bumper and two others were determined not to be his fault.
Arnold says he was reaching for a dropped drink when he hit a pole in a parking lot. He says in the I-65 crash, he swerved to avoid crashing into a supervisor's vehicle when traffic stopped suddenly.
