(INDIANAPOLIS) - Another case of bed bugs has been reported at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. Eva Pilgrim reports it's the second reported case in about a months time.
Veronica Young's 11-month-old son, Roy, spent more a week in the hospital on the 9th floor of the west wing.
"I noticed it but didn't think anything of it," said Young.
Jasmine Allen came to visit her nephew while he was in the hospital. "At the hospital I had bite marks all on my shoulder up to my neck," said Allen.
Young's daughter was the one who actually saw the bugs. When they got home, Allen said the bugs were in their hospital bag.
"I saw them and hurried up and took the bag outside."
The bag is still outside. All the clothes inside of it are now in a trash bag.
This isn't the first bed bug report for Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. Back in February, another parent reported seeing the bugs while his newborn daughter was in the hospital.
"I looked at my arm and it was the size of a full blown tick almost."
The father said he had a hard time convincing the staff there was a problem.
"They wouldn't do anything until I found the bug. they wouldn't help, they said if you find a bug put it in this container and let us know."
Young said she is still waiting on a response from the hospital.
"It's like they don't care."
Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health issued the following statement Tuesday:
"Bed bugs continue to be an issue nationwide. They are a community problem and hospitals are community places. We take bed bugs very seriously and when we learn of an incident, we immediately work with our infection control and environmental services departments."
Allen is certain she knows where the bed bugs came from.
"I'm positive that they came from the hospital."
Young said it was the last thing she thought about when her son was sick, but she wants other parents to be aware.
"I was like, this is a really nice hospital. I'm like just really surprised because it happened to me and my kids and I would never think that I would bring something home from a hospital."
