(INDIANAPOLIS) - More synthetic drugs have been deem illegal and it will be harder to legally make new ones, after Gov. Mitch Daniels signed a bill into law on Thursday.
Indiana lawmakers and Daniels passed a law last year to make chemicals known as bath salts and spice illegal, but manufacturers reworked the chemical compounds to make them legal.
Under the law signed Thursday, more than 60 chemical compounds were added to the list of illegal substances. The law also empowers the state's pharmacy board to make an emergency call on any new substances that might be created while the General Assembly isn't in session.
Under the law, retailers selling the banned substances would lose their retail merchant certificate for a year. Owners, directors or managers of the business would also be banned from obtaining a new retail merchant certificate for a year. Employees selling the synthetic drugs could face prosecution.
I-Team 8 investigated bath salts and spice and found they were easy to purchase. The substances have been known to have drastic effects on the people who take them.
