Last updated on Thursday, March 1, 2012

(VIGO COUNTY)(RTV6) - A worker was seriously injured when he was pinned beneath a burial vault in an open grave Wednesday.

The incident happened just after 10 a.m. at the Bethesda Cemetery on Thorpe Road near Old Paris Road in west-central Vigo County.

Brent Lawbert was helping lower a burial vault into an open grave when the crane toppled, knocking Lawbert into the grave and pinning him underneath.

Lawbert was trapped for nearly 50 minutes before the Sugar Creek Fire/Rescue Department was able to hoist the vault out of the grave.

Lawbert, who remained conscious during the ordeal, was taken to Union Hospital in Terre Haute with significant lower-leg injuries. He is expected to survive.

Lawbert is employed by Forsythe Brothers Vault Company.
