Last updated on Friday, March 9, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS)(AP) - Lilly Endowment Inc. has awarded two grants totaling $3 million to the American Red Cross to support disaster relief and readiness.

The Indianapolis-based endowment says $1 million will go toward helping people immediately affected by disasters including the tornado outbreak last Friday in seven states including Indiana.

A $2 million grant will help the Red Cross create a new information technology system linking people in need, relief workers, and community partners.

Lilly Endowment was created in 1937 by three members of the Lilly family to support community development, education and religion.
