Indy Gas Prices Match Chicago And New York City

Last updated on Monday, March 12, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS)(WTHR13) - Indianapolis gas prices spiked Friday and stayed high through the weekend.

Prices were found $4.05 for a gallon of regular unleaded at the CITCO on Michigan Road. Last year at this same time, gas was selling for $3.58 a gallon.

The average in Indianapolis is $3.95, which is well above the national average of $3.75.

The prices in the Circle City put Indianapolis in line with current prices in Chicago and New York City. Gas is $4.29 in Los Angeles.

As for the exact reason for this recent spike, that's unclear. But tensions over the nuclear situation in Iran and a possible military action has been cited by experts as one reason as recently as last week.

$4 a gallon has been talked about for weeks, but not predicted until later in the spring, or even the summer.

Keep in mind, if you have to fill up a 15 gallon tank this morning, it will run you around $60 total.

Today's average price is a record for this time of the year.
