(INDIANAPOLIS)(RTV6) - Only one more vote stands in the way of a statewide smoking ban in Indiana.
The House approved the anti-smoking bill Thursday night, leaving only a Senate vote before it arrives on Gov. Mitch Daniels' desk for a signature.
The final version of the bill will allow smoking in gambling facilities, bars, tobacco shops and private clubs, except for those that admit minors.
Sponsors of the bill asked House lawmakers to support the measure, even if they didn't agree with the exemptions.
"I would prefer no exemptions, and if you think this has way too many exemptions, I would still ask for you to support this bill. I think it does accomplish something, and it goes a long way to making our state smoke-free," Republican Rep. Eric Turner said.
"The Senate still has to vote on this (Friday). That's why we need to send them a strong message on this. Would you please vote 'yes' on House Bill 1149?" Democrat Rep. Charlie Brown said.
The Indiana Chamber of Commerce has stepped in to support the bill, even with the exemption for bars. It said the bill would be a step forward for Hoosiers' health.
