Last updated on Sunday, March 25, 2012

(INDIANPOLIS) - Police are investigating an accident that resulted in serious bodily injury, involving a 13-year-old driver and her 73-year-old grandmother.

Around 1:15 p.m. Saturday, IMPD officers were dispatched to the 6500 block of East Troy Avenue on the city's east side for a serious accident.

Officers arrived to find 73-year-old Donna Price on the ground in a driveway, suffering from severe head trauma. EMS crews arrived and transported the victim to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition.

Officers say Price was alert at the time of transport.

Preliminary investigation found Price's 13-year-old granddaughter was behind the wheel of her grandmother's vehicle, driving in the driveway. The vehicle struck and dragged the grandmother for several feet.

Police believe the vehicle was in reverse, with the juvenile behind the wheel when the vehicle struck her grandmother. They are attempting to determine how the vehicle was shifted into gear with the girl in the driver's seat.

Investigators have detained the juvenile and have requested Child Protective Services to the scene. Police are treating the crime scene as a possible fatal accident at this time.
