(HENRYVILLE) - Southern Indiana residents are ramping up the arduous task of salvaging belongings and making a new start after tornadoes that killed 13 people and left many without homes.
Indiana is asking the owners of unoccupied housing in storm-affected areas to register the properties so they can be made available to rent to storm victims.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency will get a firsthand look at the devastation left behind in Clark County, assessing tornado damage to determine whether the area will be eligible for federal aid.
A federal disaster declaration is expected, but it could be several days before that is issued.
There are signs of progress. Water has been restored in much of Clark County and trash pickup for debris will soon be available.
At a Monday meeting between residents and officials, residents said they have plenty of donated provisions but need financial assistance to rebuild.
"I can't understand what the people who lost family and family that are severely injured are going through," said resident Mindy Nye. "I lost my home, and those are the people that need the help first."
State officials have advised residents to document all repairs they make and take pictures of damage for the purpose of filing claims.
