FDA Tells Store Chain Pulled Shrimp Safe To Eat, But Hospital Issued Warning

Last updated on Thursday, March 8, 2012

(SOUTH BEND)(WSBT-TV) -The Food and Drug Administration has informed Martin's Super Markets that a brand of frozen shrimp it recalled last month is safe to eat.

The bacteria found in the shrimp are found naturally in many seafoods, including shrimp. The FDA said if the food is cooked properly, the bacteria usually don't make people sick.

The store chain voluntarily pulled Harvest of the Sea brand shrimp from its freezers during the weekend of Feb. 17-18 after a South Bend hospital alerted the county health department it had a patient with a certain type of bacteria in his system. That man died a week later.

County health officer Dr. Thomas Felger said the man was battling another type of illness and had a weakened immune system.
