Daniels To Pick New Secretary Of State

Last updated on Friday, March 16, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Gov. Mitch Daniels will be able to appoint a replacement for ousted Secretary of State Charlie White, based on an Indiana Supreme Court ruling on Thursday.

The court ruled 5-0 that White was eligible to take office following the 2010 election.
White was convicted of felony voter fraud charges for lying on his voter registration and was removed from office as a result.

In the opinion, the court said the Democratic Party should have contested White's candidacy before the election. Instead, the party contested it after the fact.

Democrats argued that White's opponent, Vop Osili, should become secretary of state because he was the leading eligible vote getter.

Daniels has said publicly that he has decided on a replacement, though that replacement hasn't been named.
