(FORT WAYNE) (AP) - Northeastern Indiana authorities say a weeklong effort to round up cats from a stench-filled home removed nearly 100 felines from the home.
The Journal Gazette reports that animal control officers removed 98 cats, 14 of them dead, from the condemned Fort Wayne home. The crews had to wear protective clothing and respiratory masks because the home was filled with several inches of feces and its air had dangerously high levels of ammonia.
The one-story home looked well-kept from the outside, but inside authorities found a horde of adult cats. Humane traps baited with cat food were used to catch the feral animals.
The home's previous residents told officials they had been picking up cats in the neighborhood and bringing them into the home. They could face charges or fines.
