(OAKTOWN) - Two toddlers were among five people killed in a fiery crash on a southwestern Indiana highway after their car became wedged beneath a semitrailer and was dragged for several hundred feet before bursting into flames.

State police Sgt. Todd Ringle said Emma Lockard, 21, was trying to cross a stretch of the four-lane U.S. 41 near Oaktown Wednesday night when the collision happened.

Lockard's 2-year-old and 1-year-old children were also killed, and police said Lockard was pregnant.

The other victims were Lockard's cousins, Laura Hall and Ronnie Mendoza, who were both 17.

Ringle did not know if the truck driver escaped unscathed nor whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Autopsy reports confirm all five died of smoke inhalation.
