Wishard Employee Arrested After Sexually Touching Patient

Last updated on Wednesday, February 1, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Police have arrested a man who worked as a care technician at Wishard Memorial Hospital after allegations that he had sexual contact with a patient without her knowledge.

Court documents indicated that Folajuwon Ajayi, 46, worked for Wishard in August 2011 when a 24-year-old woman was sent to the detention unit there because she was heavily intoxicated and had threatened to harm herself.

On Jan. 20, a guard said he found a cellphone in the detention wing of the building, where workers are forbidden from having phones.

While trying to find out who the phone belonged to, the guard told police that he found a sexual video dated Aug. 23, 2011, that he believed to be criminal.

"The video showed a black male touching the vaginal area of an unconscious white female patient lying on a hospital bed," part of the probable cause affidavit read.
During part of the video, investigators said, Ajayi fumbled the phone, making his work ID visible.

"We allege that he went into the secured area and removed her clothing from her private area and took pictures, and, in doing so, touched her in her private area," said Deputy Prosecutor Richard Plath.

Investigators said the phone had about 40,000 pictures and 17 videos, many of them sexual in nature.

"Several of the videos depicted sexual acts involving unknown females," court documents said.

Authorities said Ajayi tried to get his cellphone from the detention area after he discovered it was missing.

In an interview with police, investigators said Ajayi said that the phone was his, but that he had trouble with it recording on its own, without his knowledge.

"Ajayi offered no explanation as to how the video was saved on his cellular telephone," part of the probable cause affidavit read. "Ajayi said he did not know who the female patient was in the video."

Investigators said they were able to identify the woman in the video and that she was distraught that she had been touched unknowingly during her stay in the hospital.
Ajayi was charged with trafficking with an inmate, a Class C felony, and misdemeanor counts of voyeurism and battery.

Ajayi, who is of Nigerian descent and holds Canadian citizenship, was arrested at his Indianapolis home Monday evening.

The hospital issued a statement on the investigation last week.

"Wishard employees were alerted to possible inappropriate conduct by a former staff member and immediately contacted local authorities," the statement read. "Wishard is working closely with the Marion County Sheriff's Office on the investigation, as well as the Marion County Prosecutor's Office."

Police were not immediately sure if the other images and videos on the phone involved Ajayi.
