Senator Richard Lugar Defends Himself

Last updated on Tuesday, February 21, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Senator Richard Lugar defended himself Monday after opponents claim he isn’t qualified to run for office because he doesn’t live in the state.

Lugar says two attorney generals have affirmed his position that the Indianapolis address on his Indiana driver's license is valid, even though he sold the home in 1977.

Lugar says he asked for the ruling earlier this year to make sure the residence situation was proper and correct.

Last week an Indiana Tea Party group accused Lugar of voter fraud and sought to have him removed from the ballot. A complaint about his residency was filed in November.

The tea party supports Treasurer Richard Mourdock in his bid to oust Lugar in the primary election. The Indiana Election Commission is set to meet this week to consider Lugar's situation.
