(VANDERBURGH CO.) (WFIE) - Sheriff Eric Williams says the victim of a deadly car fire has been tentatively identified, but their name is not being released yet.
Deputies were called to help a car stuck in the mud on Fickas Road. That's in the east side river bottoms off of South Green River Road.
Witnesses say the car spun in the mud for more than 30 minutes before they noticed smoke.
"It's kind of freaky knowing that person died in your backyard," said Christene Methena.
Methena and Samantha Greenwell's home is surrounded by fields. Any vehicles, other than their own, on the dirt road that leads to their home are a rare sight.
Christene says she heard tires humming and thought it was just someone stuck in the mud, until she took a look outside.
"I could barely see the car there was so much smoke," said Greenwell. "I tried to scream and wave for them. I ran there and the entire car was engulfed in flames."
Williams says positive identification should be made by the Vanderburgh County Coroner's Office on Tuesday.
Investigators have been in contact with the family of the person they believe died in the fire.
Right now, it is not believed that anyone else was involved. Williams says there is no evidence to suggest this was anything but a very tragic accident.
