(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana’s ballot rules are vexing two candidates hoping to be on the May primary ballot, but supporters of the requirements say they prevent problems that have occurred in other states.
Indiana requires candidates for statewide and national office to collect 500 signatures from each of the state's nine congressional districts. Supporters say the rules prevent less-serious candidates from making it onto the ballot.
Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum and Fishers businessman Jim Wallace both have been told they fell short of the signatures needed in the 7th Congressional District to appear on the GOP ballots for president and governor.
Wallace says Indiana's system is flawed, and he and Santorum say many signatures are wrongly being disqualified.
The final say on ballot access will likely come from the Indiana Elections Commission.
