(PATOKA) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a hunting accident that took place, early yesterday afternoon, on the Patoka National Wildlife Refuge, northeast of Oakland City.
Police say 59-year-old Danny Rothrock from Milltown, in Crawford County, with two hunting companions, were rabbit hunting near Snakey Point.
Due to the thick vegetation, resulting in limited visibility, Rothrock had climbed a willow tree in the attempt to get a better view of the area. The branch he was standing on broke. Rothrock fell approximately 15 feet resulting in injuries to his lower and upper body.
Gibson County Dispatch was contacted shortly after 1:00 PM, Central Time. The Gibson County Sheriff's Department, Oakland City Police Department, Gibson County Ambulance Service, Columbia Township Fire Department, and Indiana Conservation Officers arrived at the scene.
Rothrock was carried by emergency personnel approximately 500 yards to the waiting St Mary's Hospital Life Flight helicopter and transported to St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville for treatment where he remained as of yesterday evening.
The accident is still under investigation.
