Holiday World To Purchase Kentucky Kingdom

Last updated on Wednesday, February 22, 2012

(LOUISVILLE) - Holiday World officials say the Kentucky State Fair Board is expected to vote Thursday on a lease deal with Bluegrass Boardwalk, Incorporated.

Bluegrass Boardwalk, Inc. is the company formed by members of the Koch family who own and operate Holiday World.

The company has been in talks to take over the former Kentucky Kingdom in Louisville.

Four members of the Koch family, which owns Holiday World and Splashin' Safari in Santa Claus, Indiana, formed a company this month called Bluegrass Boardwalk in order to negotiate a lease agreement with the Kentucky State Fair Board.

The owners of Holiday World may rename Kentucky Kingdom if they take over the amusement park that closed more than two years ago.

Paula Werne, a spokeswoman for the family and the park, told The Courier-Journal that changing the name of the park to Bluegrass Boardwalk "is certainly a possibility, absolutely ."

The park in Louisville has been closed since Six Flags pulled out of it amid bankruptcy proceedings. Kentucky Fair Board President Harold Workman has said the panel's top priority is to reopen the park by 2013.
