(COLUMBUS) - A Columbus man is accused of leading police on a short chase in a car containing dozens of prescription pain medication pills.
Ernest Shipley, 34, was arrested late Saturday after the chase that started on National Road near Washington Street and ended near 25th Street.
Columbus Police Patrolman Toby Combest was watching for speeding motorists at 9 p.m. near National Road and Washington Street when he saw Shipley's car allegedly driving recklessly.
Combest followed the vehicle and saw that it almost caused a couple of accidents, said Lt. Matt Myers, spokesman for Columbus Police Department.
Shipley's car allegedly ran through a stop light on National Road at Central Avenue as Combest tried to pull the vehicle over. The chase ended when the car stopped near 25th Street.
When Shipley stepped out of the car, "a bunch of pills" fell to the ground, Myers said. Officers allegedly found more pills inside the car, including a variety of prescription painkillers.
Shipley was arrested and taken to Columbus Regional Hospital for an evaluation because officers suspected he might have consumed some of the medication before the traffic stop, Myers said.
He was released from the hospital at 2 a.m. and booked into the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, reckless driving, operating a vehicle without ever obtaining a license and five counts of possession of a controlled substance.
Columbus Police Patrolmen John Velten and Zach Wright and Sgt. Morgan Horner assisted in the traffic stop and arrest.
