Last updated on Thursday, January 5, 2012

(TERRE HAUTE)(WTHI) - Many in the community are mourning Larry Michael Wilson’s death after he was taken out of his house dead after a stand-off Tuesday afternoon on Terre Haute’s south side.

Wilson worked as a coach for Vigo County's youth Football league for 19 years.

He was one of the original coaches of the league. His team was the Honey Creek renegades. Wilson was the winningest coach to date in the league, with 129 games and 7 championships.

He recently retired from coaching.

Friends of Wilson say that he was highly respected by players and parents.

After an hour-long standoff police that left Larry Michael Wilson, 61, who went by Mike, dead police arrested his son, 30-year old, Michael.

The Vigo County Sheriff's Department was called to the scene on Carlisle Street after a neighbor reported hearing a lot of glass breaking around 1 p.m. Tuesday. When deputies arrived, they were threatened by the suspect, who broke windows and yelled at them before starting a small fire.

The Terre Haute Police Special Response Team was called for backup. They removed the suspect, who remains in police custody.

"When you've got somebody that's highly agitated as this was the case, the most important thing is we have to ensure that the public is safe," said Vigo County Sheriff Greg Ewing. "We're so fortunate here in our community not only with the Fire Department, the EMS, the Terre Haute Police as well as the State Police. Everyone works very well together ans that is one fortunate thing we have here in Vigo County."

An autopsy was performed Wednesday.

Currently, Wilson is facing a felony charge of arson and a misdemeanor for battery, but Sheriff Ewing says he expects more charges to be added following the autopsy report.
