Osgood Killed After Crashing Vehicle While Texting

Last updated on Tuesday, January 3, 2012

(RIPLEY COUNTY) - Friday evening an Osgood teen was killed in a single vehicle crash on CR 200 West near the intersection of CR 100 North in Ripley County.

According to Trooper Matt Holley, Friday night at approximately 8:15 p.m. a 2001 Chrysler Town and Country van driven by 18-year-old Emily M. Huntington of Osgood was traveling northbound on CR 200 West approaching CR 100 North.

The van went into a turn that the road takes at that point and began to skid sideways. It skidded into a field then hit a slight incline which cause the van to vault then overturn on the driver's side ejecting Huntington, who was not wearing her seat belt.
Huntington was pronounced dead at the scene by a representative of the Ripley County Coroner's office.

A passenger in the vehicle, 19-year-old Brooke S. Gilland of Osgood, who was wearing her seat belt, was examined by EMS personnel at the scene and did not appear to have any injuries. She was later transported from the scene by her parents.

Gilland told Indiana State Trooper Holley that just before the crash Huntington was texting someone. Trooper Holley was able to recover Huntington's cell phone and confirmed she had been texting. He noted there was a partial text message which had not yet been sent.

The fact texting was involved diverted the driver's attention from her driving which very likely led to the crash. Statistics indicate the survival rate in vehicle crashes increase dramatically when occupants are restrained.
