Man Sentenced After Killing 4-Year-Old

Last updated on Thursday, January 19, 2012

(BLUFFTON) - A northeastern Indiana man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the fatal shooting a 4-year-old boy who was fishing with his father.

A Wells Circuit Court judge sentenced 47-year-old Bruce Pond on Tuesday to the maximum term under his plea agreement in last summer's death of Jacob Michuda. He also ordered Pond to pay about $9,000 in restitution to the boy's family for medical and other expenses.

Pond had pleaded guilty in December to voluntary manslaughter in Jake's death.

The boy was fishing off a pier with his father July 22 when authorities say Pond fired two shots from a rifle toward them because a light they were using bothered him. The child was shot once in the head and he died hours later.
