(JEFFERSONVILLE) - Southern Indiana firefighters have rescued an 8-year-old girl who was submerged in soil up to her chest after falling into a soft spot at a quarry.

Jeffersonville Fire Department Chief Eric Hedrick said that the girl was submerged for about 40 minutes Monday afternoon before firefighters extracted her with shovels and other tools. He says the girl was conscious and taken to Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville.

Hedrick says the girl and two other children slipped under a fence at the quarry and were playing in a washout area next to a retention pond when the girl fell into a soft spot and became stuck.
