Edinburg Schools Delayed Following SWAT Standoff

Last updated on Tuesday, January 24, 2012

(EDINBURGH) - Edinburgh schools were on a two-hour delay Monday morning following a SWAT situation at a nearby home.

Police responded to the home in the 200 block of Pleasant Street in reference to a call indicating a man was beaten. The home is located approximately one block from the high school.

When officers arrived to the scene, police said they located another man with a .22-caliber rifle.

Police said the suspect barricaded himself inside a home while police attempted to negotiate with him for 25 minutes. The SWAT team was then called to the scene. The team fired tear gas into the home around 7:50 a.m. and apprehended the suspect, Alex Harper.

Harper was transported to an area hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

Police said Harper came home Sunday night and fought with his parents. Harper then threatened to hurt himself, according to police. Harper's parents called the police department.

No one was injured in the incident.

Edinburg schools normally begin classes at 8 a.m. However, the school said they were unable to get the busses out to pick up the students, so classes were delayed two hours.
