Colts Fans Generally Supportive Of Firing Of Caldwell

Last updated on Thursday, January 19, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indianapolis Colts fans were generally supportive of the decision to fire head coach Jim Caldwell after a dismal season, his only losing season in three years.

Fans began calling for Caldwell's head early in the season, hoping to spark a turnaround in what turned out to be an NFL worst 2-14 campaign.

Though speculation had been that Caldwell would be retained under new general manager Ryan Grigson, the Colts decided a change was warranted.
The move signifies that the Colts are in a clear rebuilding mode. What that means for some key players is unclear.

NFL analysts speculated that it could mean the end of the Peyton Manning era in Indianapolis. Fans seem to be split on return of Manning and other veteran players, such as wide receiver Reggie Wayne.

It's clear that more personnel changes are ahead for a team that enjoyed a long period of success before the downturn.

There are plenty of options for a new head coach. Names most mentioned include Jon Gruden, who is now with ESPN, Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, who worked with new GM Ryan Grigson in Philly, Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell, Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy and former Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo, who has been in talks with owner Jim Irsay and Grigson for the defensive coordinator position.
