(UNDATED) - Jamie Showers know exactly what’s going to happen with unwanted horses in Indiana.
Showers saves horses and cares for them through Indiana Horse Rescue. She has dedicated her life to caring for these unwanted horses.
Animals that without Showers help, may have been sold at auction to what's called a kill buyer who then ships the animals to Canada or Mexico for slaughter.
It's a multi-million dollar industry where 100's of thousands of horses from the U-S end up on dinner plates in Belgium, France, Japan or Canada.
"To say that slaughtering is the only option for the unwanted, really is an easy out,"
explains Showers.
But slaughtering horses here hasn't always been easy. American slaughter houses closed a few years ago after Congress pulled funding for federal inspections of those slaughter houses.
Now a new federal law has given the money back for those inspections and that means horses will be able to be slaughtered again in the United States.
"It makes people feel better to think well we're doing it here in house, if we're keeping it in the states then we're doing it right. That's just not the case. But we lie to ourselves a lot," Showers said.
She says the law will end in the brutal deaths for thousands of these animals.
"There is some blood on your hands," she says speaking of the people who helped get the law passed, including the President who signed it into law. It's blood Showers doesn't want on hers.
That's why she'll continue her work rescuing unwanted horses. But she says, "I can only do so much."
