(SEYMOUR)(WDRB) - An Indiana community is up in arms after a man was seriously injured during a traffic stop.
Robert Edmonds Jr. may lose his sight in one eye after his run-in with Seymour police. He claims police officers beat him. Police say that's not so, and the community wants to sort it out.
Edmonds was injured after his traffic stop on November 21st. The 63-year-old had allegedly run a stop sign, abandoned his van, then refused officers' orders to stop when they found him walking nearby. Seymour police say he resisted arrest, and injured himself when he fell and hit his face on the side of the police car.
Because many Seymour residents have their doubts about the officers' account, a local religious leader organized a forum Wednesday night featuring Mayor Craig Luedeman and Chief of Police Bill Abbott. Those in attendance weren't shy with their feelings.
Edmonds is suing the city, so the mayor and police were advised by their lawyer not to talk about the incident.
Edmonds was in an Indianapolis hospital Wednesday. Chief Bill Abbott says none of the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave.
