(MARION) - Federal investigators said a central Indiana pilot passed on landing at two airports near Chicago because he didn’t want to get stuck in bad weather shortly before the plane crashed, killing all four people aboard.
(MARION) - Federal investigators said a central Indiana pilot passed on landing at two airports near Chicago because he didn't want to get stuck in bad weather shortly before the plane crashed, killing all four people aboard.
The National Transportation Safety Board's preliminary report said pilot Ray Harris, 46, of Marion, wasn't certified for flying under instrument flight rules with the low cloud cover in the Chicago area Nov. 26.
Harris inadvertently flew over the DuPage Airport then told a flight controller he didn't want to "mess with the weather" by landing at the airport in Wheeling, Ill.
The plane then crashed near Crystal Lake, Ill. Harris died with his daughters, Ramie and Shey Harris, and Chris Backus, of Eau Claire, Wis., who was Shey Harris' boyfriend.
